Open Mic Night – Opinions Please!

Tonight’s post is a little different. I won’t be sharing any excerpts or poems. Instead, I thought I would ask your opinion on a couple of photos which I have chosen for the possible cover of the book of poems I want to publish. Just to refresh your memory, a month or so ago I started toying with the idea of self publishing a collection of poems I wrote in my late teens/early twenties (I have posted a few of these on previous Open Mic Nights).  I thought it a good idea that the cover page should reflect the inspiration from those days – coffee and cigarettes :)

Well, I am 95% sure I am going to go ahead with it so I had a couple of photos taken that I am thinking of using.. I have posted them below; please give me your opinions. If they don’t look good, do let me know – I’m open to any kind of critique :)

Open Mic Night

28 August 1995

A dark and lonely room

No light to guide the way

No security or comfort

No glimpses of the day

Her dark and lonely heart

No love to see her through

No hope beyond the distance

Only memories of you

Open Mic Night

Welcome to Open Mic Night – a place where we are all free to share our work (so, if you have anything you want to share please do :) ). I hope you like the piece I’m sharing with you tonight…

Memories remain

Cruel, bitter twist of fate

Did you have to love me?

Why did you love me?

Why did you yearn for me?

What did I do to deserve your touch?

You are not here

And I miss you so much

When the nights leave me lonely

I lay wide awake

I think of your words

And I dream of a life

A life that could have been

A life that will not be

A need that grows stronger

With each passing day

Force it to die –

Watch it melt away

But though our hands

Will not be entwined

Our hearts will beat together

Our souls joined forever

Forever in time

Why did I have to love you?

Why did I love you?

Why did I yearn for you?

My tears have been bitter

But my thoughts are of you

My thoughts make me smile

Because they are of you

To utter the words ‘I love you’

It is so bitter-sweet

There is little to gain

But I do so love you

Yes, I adore you

Forever in my heart

A memory you’ll remain

The Sunday Session….What Are Your Thoughts On….

…writing being hereditary.

I did a post on this a few months ago (you can find it here) but I thought about digging the topic up again because I’ve been thinking - is writing is in the blood? Does it pass down from person to person (maybe skipping a generation or two)?

Case in point – my grandmother was a poet. After she died, her daughters collated all of her poems and bound them up to form a book. I was talking to my mother about this the other day and she told me that my grandmother was in fact a published poet. One of her uncles was a member of the Pontian Association in Thessaloniki, Greece and she used to send some of her poems to him which he published in their publications and newspapers. This uncle was also a writer.

So as you can see, there is an obvious pattern there. But is it a coincidence that I write? That I also write poetry? Is the ability to create a story hereditary?

Open Mic Night

Today’s piece is another poem from my late teens. I think I wrote this one in 1995. I hope you enjoy it.

The wall of stone has crumbled

Her many tears still fall

But all she feels is confusion

The tears she cries are now of sorrow

A memory kept alive in her soul

Her heart – never buried

Just a tired forgotten

Isn’t afraid

Yet still not strong

Otherwise hoping

Forever holding on…

** I’m off to Melbourne for a mini break from this Thursday till next Tuesday so my next blog post will be that Tuesday evening. See you all then! :) **

Open Mic Night

And today I share with you again some of my poetry. This one was written in 1996 when I had just turned 20. I can’t remember what exactly inspired this poem but I think I was a tad pissed off…..

I tear out my heart

And feed it to your soul

With nothing left to cherish

I harbour on control

Cascading thoughts appear

But forever is not clear

There are no answers left to bring

And you’re no longer here
